Winter Walking

Being a professional dog walker means that you have to learn to love all the elements, and there is one season that I think everyone agrees is the hardest to walk in…..Winter. So, what can you do to make walking in the winter more comfortable and tolerable, and maybe just a little bit enjoyable? We give you some tips below.

As temperatures start to dip and the days get shorter, it's time to start thinking about how to keep our canine companions safe and healthy during the cold winter months. Winter walks can be fun and beneficial for both you and your pup, but there are a few tips to keep in mind to make sure your walks go smoothly.

Dress Appropriately

Just like you need to bundle up to brave the cold, your pup should be dressed warmly too. Invest in a nice coat, booties, or both to keep your pup warm and dry, and look for materials that are water and wind-resistant. Also, consider getting a reflective collar or harness, as it will help keep your pup visible to cars and other people during the darker winter months.

Pay Attention to the Weather

It's important to pay close attention to the weather before heading out on your walk. Check the temperature, windchill, and any precipitation that might be in the forecast. If it's too cold or icy outside, it's best to skip the walk for your pup's safety.

Watch for Ice

Ice can be a real hazard for both you and your pup, so it's important to be on the lookout for it. Ice patches can be hard to spot, so take it slow and watch your pup's footing. If you encounter an icy patch on the sidewalk, try and stick to gritted pavements.

Stay Hydrated

It's just as important for you and your pup to stay hydrated in the winter as it is in the summer. If you're out on a longer walk, be sure to bring along a water bottle and bowl so your pup can stay hydrated and a nice Thermos filled with Coffee for yourself. With these tips in mind, you and your pup can enjoy plenty of winter walks while staying safe and warm. Just remember to keep an eye on the weather and your pup's footing and you'll both enjoy being out in the fresh winter air.

Don’t Stop Moving

Set yourself a pace and stick to it so you build up some nice body warmth.
